JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel is a family of Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that are safe and effective surgical alternatives to smoothing facial wrinkles and folds. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, these types of fillers are the fastest growing nonsurgical aesthetic procedure in the United States. But all dermal fillers are not the same!
If you’re interested in being treated with this nonsurgical physician-administered treatment option, it is important to understand that not all dermal fillers are the same! There are many benefits when choosing JUVÉDERM® injectable gels.
JUVÉDERM® is a “next-generation,” non-animal dermal filler. It is made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally present and produced substance in the body, which plays an essential role in hydrating the skin and restoring natural volume. Because hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body, no allergy skin tests are necessary prior to receiving treatment.
Utilizing advanced technology, you can expect long-lasting results with JUVÉDERM®. Because of the unique manufacturing process, JUVÉDERM® contains the highest concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid of any currently available hyaluronic acid dermal filler on the market, providing patients with extended results. This process also creates a smoother gel that flows consistently and easily into the skin to create a natural look and feel that mirrors the natural volume of skin tissue. Currently, JUVÉDERM® is the only filler on the market that possesses this gel consistency formulation. As of now, all other existing hyaluronic acid fillers are made of gels that have a more granular consistency, affecting the way it is injected and the results.
JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is proven to be safe and effective in persons of color.
JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is a nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment method that can be done in as little as 10 minutes, are minimally invasive, does not require an allergy skin test, and requires minimal downtime or recovery post-treatment.
Because JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel is available in two formulations, treatment can be personalized to address each patients’ unique needs. JUVÉDERM® Ultra can be used for contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds, whereas JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus, a more robust formula, can be used for volumizing and restoring deeper wrinkles and folds. This allows your provider to tailor treatment to meet your specific needs.
JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel is a non-surgical treatment that must be completed by a healthcare professional. JUVÉDERM® is injected under the skin using a fine needle to augment or fill, the soft tissue of the dermis (the dense inner layer of skin beneath the epidermis) to slowly add volume and shrink the size and depth of the wrinkles and folds. JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel is most effectively used for those wrinkles and folds in the lower third of the face, including “laugh” and “smile” lines, nasolabial folds, and oral commissures, more commonly known as oral commissures.
JUVÉDERM® is a “next-generation,” non-animal dermal filler. It is made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally present and produced substance in the body, which plays an essential role in hydrating the skin and restoring natural volume. As Hyaluronic acid production decreases with age, wrinkles and folds continue to appear and deepen over time. JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel helps to correct this by restoring hyaluronic acid in your skin and smoothing wrinkles and fine lines.
Because treatment with dermal fillers is non-surgical and minimally invasive, the treatment requires minimal recovery and downtime. The simple, safe and easy nature of the treatment allows for a quick visit to the office in between errands, after the gym, on the way home, or while the kids are at school. There is no downtime or recovery time required and you can return to your daily routine immediately.
Prior to treatment: Some physicians may recommend avoiding medications such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS), for at least a week prior to treatment in order to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site. Please consult with your healthcare provider prior to treatment for their recommendation.
Personalized treatment: Determining your treatment needs: Your healthcare professional will examine the soft tissue of your face to assess the depth of wrinkles and folds to determine your treatment. JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel is available in two formulations—JUVÉDERM® Ultra for versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds, and JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus, a robust formulation for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and wrinkles. This allows your healthcare professional to better tailor treatment to your unique needs. Your healthcare professional may even take pretreatment photographs so you can see the difference after treatment!
Before the procedure: Although anesthesia is not required, your healthcare professional may use topical or injectable anesthesia to numb the treatment area first.
The procedure: Your healthcare professional will ease the JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel under your skin to augment, or fill, wrinkles and folds. Following the injection, your healthcare professional may gently massage the treated areas. The procedure is quick and easy. The injection itself usually takes only about 15 minutes.
JUVÉDERM® injectable gels labeled with “XC” contain pain-reducing lidocaine to help manage pain or discomfort during the injection. You may also ask your Silk treatment provider about a topical numbing cream or ice to help further minimize discomfort.
With JUVÉDERM, there is minimal recovery or downtime after the procedure.
For the first 24 hours following treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and consumption of alcoholic beverages in order to help minimize the risks of temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the treatment sites. After the treatment, some temporary injection-related reactions may occur, including redness, pain, firmness, swelling, and bumps. Studies have shown that these are usually mild to moderate in nature and clear up on their own in 7 days or less. If you experience swelling at the injection site, you can apply an ice pack for a brief period. Your healthcare professional will tell you when makeup may be applied after your treatment.
Immediately! You will notice an instant improvement of the treatment area as soon as your provider is done. Typically, patients only require one treatment to smooth wrinkles and achieve optimal results that can last up to 6 months. Results are temporary and may vary, so consult with your treatment provider to create the right treatment plan to help you achieve your desired look. Additional treatments may be required for “touch up” to help maintain results.
Before and after care
Avoid anti-inflammatory drugs, including Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Vioxx, etc., aspirin, high doses of Vitamin E, or Ginko Biloba one week prior to treatment. This will help to reduce the potential side effects such as bruising and/or swelling of the treated area(s).
Avoid consumption of alcoholic beverages before treatment to decrease the chances of bruising and/or swelling.
You cannot receive treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
If you have a history of oral herpes, you must pre-treat with an anti-viral medical three days before your receiving treatment
Minimal side effects such as slight swelling, redness, and tenderness may occur after your treatment and usually resolves within 72 hours. To relieve discomfort a cold compress may be used immediately after treatment to soothe swelling. To do so, dip a cloth dipped in cold water, wring out excess water, and gently rest on the treatment area.
To avoid injuring your skin, avoid touching the treated area within 6 hours of treatment. After 6 hours, the area can be washed gently using antibacterial soap and water.
Avoid exposing the treated area to extreme hot or cold weather, including sunbathing, heat lamps, and extremely cold temperatures.
It is important to note that if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the injection punctures could trigger an outbreak. To help prevent this, ask your treatment provider about the medications you can take to help minimize this risk.
Certain medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, and supplements such as St. John’s wort, and high doses of Vitamin E supplements may increase the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site. To prevent this, avoid consumption for one week after treatment.
Avoid all skin treatments over the treatment area for a minimum of one-week post-treatment. This includes aesthetic lasers, microdermabrasion, and IPL.
