Skin resurfacing is a proven way to soften the appearance of textural flaws — including acne scars, wrinkles, fine lines and oversized pores — and improve the skin’s overall radiance. At Silk Medical Spa, we can rejuvenate the surface of the skin using a few different methods, including facial peels and microneedling. Sometimes we use one of these methods as a standalone solution; in other cases, we combine them for more transformative results.⁣

If you’d like to improve the texture and tone of your skin, our team would be happy to evaluate your needs in person and recommend the most suitable treatment or combination of treatments to help you achieve your goals.⁣

Collagen Induction Therapy Or Microneedling⁣

Collagen induction therapy, also known as microneedling, is another non-invasive skin tightening option we offer at SILK. Treatment involves using tiny needles on a hand-held device that is gently rubbed over the skin. The needles create tiny puncture wounds on the skin, that trigger the body’s natural healing process, causing the skin to produce more collagen for a smoother and more youthful appearance.⁣⁣

⁣⁣Depending on your specific needs, we utilize a combination of anti-aging serums or platelet rich plasma (PRP) that is applied to the treatment area. The small skin openings allow for penetration of the serum or PRP, inducing further collagen formation, and penetrating the products into the deeper layers of the skin to further enhance the results. ⁣

Results are gradual and improve over the course of several months. Repeat sessions are generally recommended to achieve the most desirable results.⁣

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)⁣

Some of our skin resurfacing patients can benefit from the use of platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, which is taken from their own blood. PRP is full of proteins and rich in stem cells and regenerative growth factors enhance tissue healing and improve cell regeneration. When used for facial rejuvenation purposes, PRP can prompt the body to produce new collagen and tissue to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and results in softer, smoother looking skin.

After drawing a small amount of blood, we spin the blood through a centrifuge to separate the red and white blood cells from the platelets and plasma. Once prepared, the PRP is microneedled into the skin for complete skin rejuvenation. The treatment is minimally invasive and only takes a few minutes.

Initial results can be seen about three to four weeks after microneedling, continuing to improve over time. Multiple treatment sessions spaced one to two months apart are recommended to achieve the desired outcomes.

Rejuvenize Peel⁣⁣

The Rejuvenize Peel is a chemical peel that accelerates the skin exfoliation process. A specially formulated chemical solution is applied to the skin, causing the damaged outer layer to flake or slough off and revealing softer, smoother, and firmer skin. This remedies imperfections like fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, large pores and uneven skin texture.⁣⁣

⁣Initial results can be seen after a single peel, with more noticeable results after three to six peels. The exact number of treatments depends on how damaged the skin is.⁣⁣

How Do I Know Which Skin Resurfacing Treatment Is Best For Me?

Luckily, you are not on your own to determine which form of skin resurfacing is best for you. We're here to help you! Our experienced team of doctors, nurses, and aestheticians has dedicated years of training and clinical practice to understanding the skin. Here, we can help you discover what is causing your cosmetic concerns and how to get the best results from treatment that revolves around you and your preferences. Our skin resurfacing treatments can address multiple concerns simultaneously, take very little time to perform, and incur little downtime if any!

Can I Combine Skin Resurfacing With Other Treatments?

Yes! Our skin resurfacing treatments are very gentle, safe, and effective. They are perfect for layering with other treatments, even with other skin resurfacing treatments. What is so advantageous about consulting with our nationally-recognized team of physicians is that they have an abundance of knowledge that gets focused on your skin and your unique concerns. During your consultation, you can expect a thorough discussion of your concerns and goals followed by a careful examination of your skin. The data obtained during this intake session informs your doctor's treatment planning, which is intended to result in the very best improvements to your area or areas of concern.

Does Skin Resurfacing Hurt?

In our Encino office, skin resurfacing is performed using the gentlest modalities. These include microneedling, microneedling with PRP, and chemical peels. The microneedling procedure may be performed using a topical numbing cream to ensure comfort throughout the process. In general, microneedling is not painful. However, in areas where there is little fatty tissue between the skin and underlying muscle or bone, microneedling can be uncomfortable. A topical anesthetic does not completely numb the area but it does acheive sufficient desensitization to make the process easily tolerable. Our Rejuvenize chemical peel is a proven medium-grade peel that achieves outstanding results with little downtime, if any at all. During treatment, you might experience tingling or stinging. Your skin may feel warm or hot for a short time. Once the chemical solution is removed, all sensations should cease, though your skin may look red for a few hours.

How Many Skin Resurfacing Treatments Are Needed To See Results?

The number of skin resurfacing treatments that you need is completely unique to you. After listening to your desired outcome and preferences,  your provider will discuss with you the treatment options that align with your needs. This includes the degree of improvement that may be achieved with a single session versus a series of treatments. Whether your goal is to correct the signs of aging and sun damage or to begin treating them long before they are visible, you can schedule microneedling treatments as often as every four to six weeks. The same is true for the Rejuvenize chemical peel. Each of these procedures is beneficial for supporting your skin as it continues to age.

Is There Any Recovery Time Needed After Skin Resurfacing?

In many situations, skin resurfacing treatments require you to take at least a day or two off work to allow side effects like redness and swelling to resolve. Our skin resurfacing treatments are not the norm. In general, each may incur a few hours of skin discoloration. Microneedling may cause you to look red and puffy for a few hours. You may see tiny pinpoints of blood during that time, so may want to go home after your appointment. The Rejuvenize peel may cause the skin to look slightly yellow for a few hours. Redness is also a possibility, after which the skin may flake or peel for a few days. When you consult with our team about skin resurfacing, you will be given the full extent of information you need to plan your appointment and downtime accordingly.
