What is Coolsculpting?
Silk Medical Spa was founded by two of Los Angeles’s top, board-certified plastic surgeons. We understand that everybody is different, and while some may opt for surgical treatments, others may be seeking non-surgical alternatives to restoring their confidence. That’s why we provide our patients with the highest grade medical technology, coupled with our expert team of professionals who are committed to excellence in care.
Cryolipolysis, also known as fat freezing, is a non-invasive treatment that uses patented cooling technology to break down fat cells, permanently resulting in a reduction of body fat without damage to other tissues. Fat cells don’t like the cold, so at a certain temperature, they will freeze. Once that happens, your body will naturally eliminate the dead cells in 1-3 months or more, resulting in up to 20%-25% reduction of fat in a treated area.
It is FDA approved for long-term results in 9 areas including the most troubling and stubborn areas of the body:
- Back fat
- Outer + Inner thighs
Who is a candidate for Coolsculpting?
CoolSculpting is a proven fat-reduction treatment that can be a wonderful choice for most healthy adults. As a fat-reduction process, CoolSculpting can achieve satisfying body contouring improvements. It is not intended for weight loss, so the ideal candidate will be at a weight they would like to maintain going forward after their treatment.
How can I prepare for Coolsculpting?
If you are at your ideal weight and ready to sculpt your body with CoolSculpting, there is very little that you need to do to prepare. Some helpful tips for a smooth treatment include:
- Avoid certain medications and supplements. There is a chance of bruising after treatment. Medications and supplements like aspirin, fish oil, and vitamin E thin the blood. So does alcohol. To reduce the risk of bruising, avoid these and other substances as advised by your provider.
- Take care of your skin. While CoolSculpting is not a thermal-energy treatment like lasers, it is still wise to avoid tanning before undergoing treatment. There is a potential that having a sunburn at the time of treatment could make it more uncomfortable than it has to be.
- Prepare for your time in the office. CoolSculpting treatments take less than an hour. Still, it is helpful to have something to occupy your time as the treatment progresses. This not only prevents boredom but can take your mind off of the odd sensations your body may feel during your treatment.
- Prepare for long-term results. Before undergoing CoolSculpting, it is helpful to know what you will do to maintain your new sculpted body through healthy eating and fun exercise.
What Happens During the Coolsculpting Treatment?
The applicator will be placed on the treatment area and there will be a slight sucking sensation as it adheres to your body, followed by that signature cooling effect. During the procedure, you may experience sensations of pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, and cramping at the treatment site. These sensations subside as the area becomes numb. After the applicator is detached, your provider will do a brief massage on the area to break up the treated fat cells and enhance the fat reduction. That’s it!
"Kimberly at the front desk is sweet, responsive, and will work with you to locate the best price. Abel is expert at addressing your concerns, listening to what you want and knowing what to do. I have had only positive experiences at Silk, highly recommend the whole staff!"
What is recovery like from Coolsculpting?
Non-Invasive CoolSculpting is advantageous because it gets results without incurring downtime. There is no sedation or anesthesia used during CoolSculpting sessions. This means you can drive yourself home safely and go about your normal activities without concern. Some people work out the same day they undergo treatment. To help the body flush fat cells that are targeted during the session, clients are encouraged to drink plenty of water.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is The Coolsculpting® Treatment Right For Me?
CoolSculpting® is a fat-reduction treatment for men and women who want to get rid of stubborn pockets of fat in certain areas of their body (see FDA cleared areas for treatment). CoolSculpting® is NOT a weight loss procedure. CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical alternative that has little to no downtime. To see if CoolSculpting® is right for you, take contact us for a complimentary one-on-one consultation.
How Much Does It Cost?
The cost of treatment depends on what areas you treat and how many treatments you have. Many patients choose to do CoolSculpting® on multiple areas to reach their ideal end result. During your consultation, one of our experts will work with you to find a personalized treatment that fits your body and your budget
Can Coolsculpting® Reduce Fat On Every Part Of My Body?
CoolSculpting® is FDA-cleared for the treatment of visible fat bulges in the submental (under the chin) and submandibular (under the jawline) areas, thigh, abdomen and flank, along with bra fat, back fat, underneath the buttocks (also known as banana roll) and upper arm. It is also FDA-cleared to affect the appearance of lax tissue with submental area treatments.
Is the Coolsculpting procedure painful?
CoolSculpting can be uncomfortable as the device applicator is working. However, most patients do not describe the sensations they experience as painful. When the applicator is applied, patients feel a tugging sensation. This is because the tissue is secured using suction. When the applicator begins to cool, the sensation of cold can progress to aching or mild cramping. The skin may tingle or sting. Eventually, the nerve endings are numb and remain so for the duration of the procedure.
Are There Any Post-treatment Side Effects?
Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, or skin sensitivity, and sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after submental or submandibular area treatment. Rare side effects may also occur. Paradoxical hyperplasia (visibly enlarged tissue volume in the treated area) may develop two to five months after treatment and requires surgical intervention for correction. As with any medical procedure, ask your physician if CoolSculpting® is right for you.
How Long Does A Treatment Take?
Each CoolSculpting® treatment is different, so it depends on which areas of the body and how many of them you plan on doing. Depending on the area, treatment can be done in as little as 35 minutes. If you opt to do multiple treatments in a session, expect to spend more time.
How Many Treatments Do I Need?
While you will see up to a 20-25% fat reduction in the treated area after a single treatment, it depends on the person and the area being treated. Your provider will work with you to determine if additional treatments are necessary to reach your desired goal.
When Will I See Results?
You’ll start to see changes as soon as 1-3 months post-treatment. Final results may take 6 months or more.
What Happens To The Frozen Fat Cells?
CoolSculpting® uses cryolipolysis, which is just a technical way to say fat-freezing. When fat cells freeze, they die and are then naturally eliminated through the body’s natural process. Don’t worry: This process happens so gradually, you won’t necessarily notice a difference in your day-to-day life.
Is The Coolsculpting® Treatment Safe?
CoolSculpting® has been cleared by the FDA to effectively treat nine different areas of the body (see the FDA cleared areas below). Clinical trials have demonstrated CoolSculpting® to be safe and effective in reducing fat in certain areas.
Who Should Not Have Coolsculpting®?
The CoolSculpting® treatment is not for everyone. You should not have it done if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. The CoolSculpting® procedure is not a weight-loss treatment. As with any medical procedure, ask your physician if CoolSculpting® is right for you.
Can I Gain Weight After Having A Coolsculpting® Treatment?
The CoolSculpting® treatment helps eliminate stubborn pockets of fat. But, since CoolSculpting® is not a weight loss treatment, it is possible to gain weight post-treatment if you don’t keep up your healthy habits. This kind of weight gain will most likely happen evenly throughout your body, not just in treatment areas.
Can I combine Coolsculpting® with other procedures?
At Silk: A Medical Spa, clients may choose to combine their CoolSculpting session with other treatments to maximize their time in our relaxing facility. During your consultation, discuss your cosmetic goals with your provider and we will devise a plan to help you meet them in as little time as possible.
Are there any risks associated with Coolsculpting®?
There are very few risks associated with CoolSculpting. Of the millions of treatments that have been conducted around the world over the past several years, less than 1% of them have resulted in complications. The vast majority of people who get CoolSculpting experience temporary side effects like cramping, aching, numbness, and tingling in the treatment area. There is a minor risk that these side effects may be prolonged in some cases. There is also the very rare risk of paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, a condition in which fat cells thicken and enlarge. This is a rare complication that can be corrected with liposuction.
